Korean Pojagi
about Pojagi Patchwork
Pojagi (포자기) is an ancient traditional Korean textile art form with function. These textiles were used to wrap and store everyday household items, family heirlooms, and gifts. Pojagi was also used as tablecloths and carrying sacks. Utilized by all classes, there were many variations made from silk, embroidered fabrics, to scrap fabrics.
a Korean textile tradition
The kind of pojagi I am particularly intrigued by is jogakbo (조각보) “patchwork”, made from scraps of fabrics, often left over from making clothing. I created these pieces with fabric scraps left over from other projects. The technique of jogakbo easily lends itself to less waste and more sustainable practices when making clothing or other things made from fabric. You can create unique one of a kind textiles with multiple functions.
