Vintage Shearling Coat Redesign

Thrift Flip: How I upcycled this vintage jacket

I thrifted this very large men’s coat and decided to redesign it. I don’t always have a solid plan when I’m sewing something for myself. All I had in mind was a general idea of proportion and length, and the rest was freestyle, little by little, taking apart, cutting, sewing, trying on, and repeat. Originally I wanted a cropped coat, but then added more length by way of patchwork.

The edges were pretty easy to finish since the shearling and skin does not fray. The over all silhouette of the coat is a bit imperfect, and at first I wasn’t thrilled about that outcome. However, over time, I realized that’s what’s so good about this coat - the quirky imperfections.
